What is NPTEL?

NPTEL is a National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning, and it was established in early 2000s. NPTEL was planned and discussed by various IITs(Indian Institute of Technology), IIMs(Indian Institute of Management), CMU (Carnegie Mellon University) from 1999 to 2003. It is a joint initiative between the IITs and IISc Bangalore which for creating quality course content in various domains of Engineering and Sciences. In the initial years of its launch it provided course contents in only Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. These were the Courses which were across Engineering Colleges in India fro undergraduates, and the syllabus for the same was drafted by AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) and other major Universities in India. Now as the years went through it was decided that NPTEL should move to various other domains and it did. NPTEL today provides web / video course contents in various domains of Engineering, Sciences and Humanities.

What is the need of NPTEL?

NPTEL was established because of the following reasons

• India needed qualified manpower in the field of Engineering and technology but which was far less than the required number of Engineering Graduates which the Engineering and Technical Institutions could meet up to.

• There were a lesser number of Engineering institutes and there, the teachers that were well qualified to teach were also lesser in number.

• Majority of all the teachers joining were either young, inexperienced or just undergraduate degree holders.

• To tackle all the above issues and to provide quality Engineering education, NPTEL was formed by joint efforts of IITs and IISc, Bangalore. It was more of the responsibility of the Premier Institutes of India towards Aspiring Indian Engineering Graduates.

• India also needed (and still needs) quality teachers and professors, and the course material that NPTEL creates would also help as course training materials.

• Many students across India could not attend the Premier Institutes like IITs, IIMs, IIsc, NITs, due to limited seats in those institutes. Thus, the course material is freely available on the NPTEL platform and anyone can Access it.

• People who graduated from colleges want to enhance their skills, or learn any new skills required for their jobs and careers can do it on NPTEL for free that too created by the professors from the premier Indian Institutes.

What is NPTEL Online Certification?

NPTEL currently provides web and video courses across 23 domains online for free. And with the increase in number of course domains there were an increased number of users or lets say learners. So, in 2014 the NPTEL Online Certification Program was started. To get a certificate a learner has to register for the course and also for the certification exam. Certifications were introduced by the NPTEL so as to give learners a producible result in the form of certificate.

The certification courses are carried out by the NPTEL two times in a year, January to June and July to December. Joining and learning from the course is free for everyone, but if a learner wishes to get a certificate he shall have to take up on a test. And after passing the test the learner shall be awarded with a certificate. Again, the courses can be freely accessed by any learner, but the learner has to pay fees for the exam in case the learner needs a certificate. It is NOT AT ALL  mandatory for a learner to sign up for the exam, certification exam needs a fee of approximately 1000 Indian Rupees (One Thousand Rupees Only).

How do I register for NPTEL courses?

• Visit https://nptel.ac.in/noc/noc_course.html

• Select the domain you need to take course in.

• If you cannot find the course you need to enrol in click on “All Courses”.

• Here you can find all the courses available to enrol.

• Click on “Enrol Now”

• On the next page you can see a “Join Button”

• Click on the “Join” Button.

• Next opens a “Registration Page”.

• If you already have an account, please fill the user id and password and click on”Sign In”.

• If you do not have an account with the portal click on “Sign Up Now”.

• Alternatively you could use your Google, Facebook or Microsoft account to log in.

• If You clicked on “Sign Up Now”, you could see options like Username, Password and Email Address. Fill those according to your choice and click on send verification code.

• You shall receive the code on your email which you provided in the registration form.

• Check your email account inbox and also spam, sometimes the email is registered as spam.

• Get the code from email and write it on the registration page.

• On the next page you will be asked about your personal details, please fill accordingly.

• Tick the boxes, you may read what the code of honor and terms and conditions are by clicking on those links.

• Click on Review and join the course.

• Yay! You have successfully joined the course, now take the course seriously, solve assignments and best luck with learning.

Is there any Value of the NPTEL Online Certification?

Yes and No, both the answers are valid for this question. When you get knowledge from certain courses it is best to say yes, it has value. And the certification being given by the NPTEL, IITs, and MHRD India does carry a certain value. It may be used to show off in certain job interviews, and also many jobs do require certifications for certain positions. Yes the NPTEL Online Certification does have a value.

And No, if you just get enrolled in certain courses, earn no knowledge and still get certified by mugging up and writing answers, you could be caught up in the interview by the interviewer as the interviewer would certainly ask about the courses and its learning and would also test your concept and knowledge about your certification. In this case if you could confidently answer about it that's great, but what you actually need is knowledge.
